JEFFREY S. BLAND PhD, FACN, CNS

Dr. Bland received his doctorate in neurobiochemistry from the University of Oregon and his certification as a clinical laboratory director from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. He is a renowned practitioner, scientist, educator, and author who is a former senior research scientist and director at the Linus Pauling Institute of Science and Medicine. Dr. Bland is a co-founder of Bastyr University and the founder of the Institute for Functional Medicine.
ROBERT H. LERMAN, MD, PhD
Director of Medicine and Extramural Clinical Research for Metagenics, Inc.
Dr. Lerman received his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University and his PhD in nutritional biochemistry and metabolism from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is board-certified in internal medicine and has held leadership positions in nutrition in Boston hospitals and chief of medicine positions in Army hospitals in Europe.

MATTHEW L. TRIPP, PhD

Dr. Tripp received his master’s degree from Western Michigan University and his doctorate in microbiology and physiology from Washington State University. He was a pioneer in identifying regulatory protein phosphorylation cascades and conducted industrial research for nearly 20 years in Fortune 500 companies such as Kellogg Company, Miller Brewing Company, and Kraft General Foods.

VINCENT CASTRONOVO, MD, PhD
Director of the Metastasis Research Laboratory, Center for Experimental Cancer Research, University of Liège
Dr. Castronovo received his medical degree summa cum laude and his doctorate in biomedical sciences, also summa cum laude, at the University of Liège in Belgium. He served at the National Cancer Institute of the NIH before establishing the Metastasis Research Laboratory at his alma mater, where he also became the biology department chair in the medical school. For over a decade, he has been interested in the importance of nutrition to prevent cancers and malignant recurrences, as well as to reduce chemotherapy side effects. Dr. Castronovo lectures worldwide on the topics of nutritional medicine and is the recipient of numerous honors. He has authored more than 200 scientific publications and books, and is considered one of today’s top international opinion leaders in the field of cancer research.
DAVID E. CUMMINGS, MD
Associate Professor of Medicine, Division of Metabolism, Endocrinology & Nutrition, University of Washington
Dr. Cummings received his medical degree cum laude from the prestigious Harvard Medical School-Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Division of Health Sciences and Technology (HST). He is a former chief medical resident for the Seattle VA Medical Center. Dr. Cummings is the author of over 75 published articles, with a research focus on neuroendocrine mechanisms regulating appetite, weight, and blood sugar. His honors include the NIH Physician-Scientist Award and a Burroughs-Wellcome Fund Career Award
EDWARD A. DENNIS, PhD
Professor, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, University of California at San Diego School of Medicine and Revelle College
Dr. Dennis received his doctorate in chemistry from Harvard University and completed his postdoctoral work at Harvard Medical School. He was selected as the director of the LIPID MAPS consortium grants from the NIH, allocated to the development of a comprehensive classification for lipids. Dr. Dennis is also an adjunct professor at The Scripps Research Institute. He is a past recipient of the prestigious Avanti Award for research in lipid enzymology from the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and is the author of over 270 original research publications in scientific journals, editor of 13 books, and the holder of six patents (with several pending).
JOEL M. EVANS, MD
Obstetrician/Gynecologist and Director of the Center for Women’s Health
Dr. Evans received his medical degree from Mount Sinai School of Medicine and completed his residency at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He practices integrative health care and was honored as a founding diplomate of the American Board of Holistic Medicine. He has also been recognized for his service and guidance in congressional healthcare reform. Dr. Evans lectures frequently on the applications of functional medicine in traditional clinical practice.
BARRY M. FORMAN, MD, PhD
Director of the Department of Gene Regulation and Drug Discovery and Professor of the Division of Molecular Medicine and Department of Diabetes, Endocrinology & Metabolism at the Beckman Research Institute of City of Hope National Medical Center
Dr. Forman received his MD and PhD as part of the NIH Medical Scientist Training Program at New York University School of Medicine, and was awarded a postdoctoral fellowship at the Salk Institute for Biological Sciences. He is a biomedical scientist who has been recognized by the Nobel Assembly and American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology for his research in furthering the understanding of disease. Dr. Forman also received the 2005 ASBMB-AMGEN award, recognizing new investigators for significant achievements in the application of biochemistry and molecular biology to disease understanding. He holds 15 patents, with additional patents pending.
LOUIS J. IGNARRO, PhD
Distinguished Professor, Department of Molecular and Medical Pharmacology, University of California, Los Angeles
Dr. Ignarro holds a BS in pharmacology from Columbia University and received his PhD in pharmacology from the University of Minnesota. He also received a postdoctoral fellowship in chemical pharmacology from the NIH. He is the author of numerous articles and his research has been recognized by pharmaceutical companies Lily and Merck, as well as the American Heart Association for his contributions to the advancement of cardiovascular science. Dr. Ignarro is one of the recipients of the 1998 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for demonstrating the cardiovascular-signaling properties of nitric oxide. He was also inducted into the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
DAVID J. A. JENKINS, MD, PhD, DSc
Professor and Canada Research Chair of Nutrition and Metabolism in the Department of Nutritional Sciences at the University of Toronto & Director of the Clinical Nutrition and Risk Factor Modification Center at St. Michaels’ Hospital
Dr. Jenkins received his scientific degrees from Oxford University and is also a staff physician at St. Michael’s Hospital. He is well recognized for his nutritional research and is credited with developing the concept of glycemic index as a way of explaining how dietary carbohydrate impacts blood sugar. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada: the Academies of Arts, Humanities and Sciences of Canada. Dr. Jenkins is the international editor of the Journal of the American College of Nutrition, and the author of numerous published scientific articles on dietary intervention in the management of disease and reduction of risk factors.
JOHN F. W. KEANA, PhD
Professor Emeritus of Synthetic Organic and Medicinal Chemistry at the University of Oregon
Dr. Keana earned his PhD in chemistry at Stanford University, with his postdoctoral year at Columbia University. He has been recognized by the NIH and directs research that focuses on the application of novel molecules to help solve important problems in biochemistry, molecular biology, neuroscience, and medicine. He has served as a consultant for a variety of biochemistry and pharmaceutical companies, as well as national health organizations. Dr. Keana holds 69 patents and has authored over 200 published scientific articles.
ROGER S. NEWTON, PhD
Senior Vice President of Pfizer Global Research & Development and Director of Esperion Therapeutics
Dr. Newton received a masters of science degree in nutritional biochemistry from the University of Connecticut and his doctorate in nutrition from the University of California Davis. His postdoctoral fellowship was at the NIH-sponsored Specialized Center of Research in Atherosclerosis at the University of California, San Diego. He has vast experience in the pharmaceutical industry and is widely recognized for his contributions. Dr. Newton is also an adjunct associate professor of pharmacology at the University of Michigan Medical School. He has co-authored nearly one hundred peer-reviewed articles and chapters during his research, which also includes the nutritional management of cardiovascular disease issues.
PHILIPP E. SCHERER, PhD
Professor of Internal Medicine, Director, Touchstone Center for Diabetes Research at University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas
Dr. Scherer received his PhD in molecular biology at the University of Basel in Switzerland and completed his postdoctoral fellowship at the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research in Massachusetts. He has also served as an associate professor at the Albert Einstein School of Medicine at Yeshiva University. Dr. Scherer’s research includes the discovery of a protein found to be influential in problems associated with diabetes. He is the author of numerous articles and is a member of the editorial board for the Journal of Biological Chemistry. Dr. Scherer is the recipient of the 2005 Outstanding Scientific Achievement Award of the American Diabetes Association for his ongoing research.
